Reclaim Your Time to Enrich Your Life

The 5 Ways to Take Better Care of Yourself

I’m sure few of us can claim that 100% of our time is used exactly how we would like it to be. Commitments with work, family and school can mean that a sizable portion of your time is working on goals that aren’t entirely your own. Spending your free time working on yourself, your habits, goals, and projects can take more energy and ultimately make your free time more rewarding. Self-care also helps us sharpen our mental and physical health through better self-esteem, stress management, and overall well-being.

1.         Schedule the time.

As you sit down and think about your life and what you want to do, you will be looking at ways to free up time versus what you do. It’s crucial that you take a blank weekly schedule (you can write it out on a piece of paper or use your calendar) and assign blocks for the things you love — the stuff on your essentials list. If you want to exercise, for example, when will you do it? Put the blocks of time on your schedule, and make these blocks the most important appointments of your week. Schedule the rest of your life around these blocks.

2.         Re-think your routine.

Often we get stuck in a routine that’s anything but what we really want our days to be like. Is there a better way of doing things? You’re the creator of your life — make a new routine that’s more pleasant, more optimal, more filled with things you love.

3.         Your evenings.

Before you go to bed, the time is also golden, as it exists every day, and it’s usually ultimately yours to schedule. What do you want to do with this time? Read? Spend time with your kids? Work on a hobby you’re passionate about? Take advantage of this time.

4.         Breathe the right scents.

We know that breathing techniques can help us chill TF out. But what we breathe might be just as important as how we breathe. While scientists continue their back and forth on the benefits of aromatherapy, research suggests that when life gives you lemons, citrus scents — orange essential oil in particular — can help slash stress and anxiety.

5.         Stressless.

Ugh. Stress. We all know the feeling, and if you’ve never experienced anxiety, likely, you’ve never attended a family dinner. But stress can become a real burden on health if you find yourself in that state all the time. By now, we all know that anxiety is terrible for our health. Research suggests that stress may be contagious, and the more stressed we think we are, the worse it might be for our heart health.
