There seem to be many misconceptions and questions about backflow incense out there, so I've gone ahead and answered the ones I've seen most often.  1. How does it work? Why does the smoke go down? ​ As the incense burns, it produces smoke, pushing it into the surrounding air. Some of that smoke is pushed into the hole in the middle of the incense cone.
